Congress Names MLA Sibamoni Bora as Nagaon Lok Sabha By-Poll Candidate

Former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora returns to electoral politics as Congress takes on former IAS officer Devasish Sharma in the October 6 Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election

Nagaon: The Congress has named former Batadroba MLA Sibamoni Bora as its candidate for the upcoming Nagaon Lok Sabha by-election, setting up a contest with BJP nominee Devasish Sharma. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge approved Bora’s candidature, according to an AICC release issued on Monday.

Sibamoni Bora, a former Block Development Officer, made her electoral debut in the 2021 Assam Assembly elections and defeated sitting BJP MLA Angoorlata Deka from Batadroba by 32,820 votes. She secured 84,278 votes, around 60 per cent of the constituency’s total.

Bora comes from a prominent political family. She is the daughter of former Batadroba MLA Kiran Bora and daughter-in-law of Golap Borbora, Assam’s first non-Congress chief minister.

The former Batadroba seat was abolished after the 2023 delimitation exercise and incorporated into the Nagaon-Batadraba Assembly constituency. The BJP has fielded Devasish Sharma, a former Nagaon DC who took voluntary retirement from the IAS before entering politics.

The bypoll will be held on October 6, with counting scheduled for October 9. The Nagaon seat fell vacant after Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi resigned and later joined the BJP.
