Chinese President’s first India visit in seven years is expected to give fresh momentum to efforts to normalise bilateral ties

New Delhi: Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in New Delhi on Saturday for a two-day visit to attend the BRICS Summit, marking his first trip to India in seven years amid efforts to improve strained bilateral relations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with Xi at 6 pm on Saturday. Xi was received at Delhi airport by Union Minister Jitin Prasada, with cultural performances organised to welcome the Chinese leader.
The visit comes against the backdrop of efforts by India and China to rebuild ties following the prolonged military standoff in eastern Ladakh and the 2020 Galwan Valley clashes.
During their meeting, Modi and Xi are expected to review the situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) and discuss further measures to normalise relations, including expanding trade and investment.
The two countries have undertaken several confidence-building measures over the past year. Recently, National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held Special Representatives’ talks in Beijing on the boundary dispute, trans-boundary cooperation and maintaining peace along the LAC.
