BJP reported Rs 96.27 crore in election expenditure in Assam, compared with Congress’ Rs 22.62 crore on general party propaganda

Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) spent more than four times as much as the Congress on its election campaign in Assam during the 2026 Assembly polls, according to expenditure statements filed with the Election Commission.
The BJP reported total spending of Rs 96.27 crore in Assam, of which Rs 76.73 crore was spent on general party propaganda and Rs 19.54 crore on candidates and related expenses.
Advertising was the biggest component of the BJP’s general propaganda spending in the state, accounting for around Rs 37 crore. Travel expenses linked to star campaigners added another Rs 27.3 crore.
The Congress, meanwhile, reported Rs 22.62 crore in general party propaganda expenditure in Assam. Its spending was the party’s second-highest among the five states and Union Territory where it contested, after Kerala, where it spent Rs 59.28 crore.
The figures highlight the sharp difference in financial resources available to the two parties during the elections. The BJP received nearly Rs 1,473 crore at its central headquarters between March 15 and May 6, while the Congress reported net receipts of Rs 207.17 crore across its central and state units.
Across Assam, Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, the BJP’s disclosed expenditure stood at around Rs 159.7 crore. Its statements for Kerala and West Bengal were yet to be made public.
The BJP’s central balance also rose by Rs 904.6 crore during the election period, while the Congress’ combined funds across its central and five state units fell by Rs 65.86 crore.
