Shillong: Vice President of India C. P. Radhakrishnan on September 7 laid the foundation stones for a series of development projects worth more than Rs 1,010 crore in Meghalaya.
The projects span key sectors including water supply, road connectivity, healthcare and power infrastructure, marking the start of several major initiatives across the state. The largest project is the New Shillong Water Supply Scheme, Phase II (Part A), for which the foundation stone was laid at an estimated cost of Rs 850.58 crore.
Radhakrishnan also laid the foundation stone for a 110-metre bridge over the Umngot on the Jongksha–Kharang–Dienglieng–Nongjrong–Moodymmai–Wahiajer road. The bridge will be built at an estimated cost of Rs 21.86 crore.
Another project is the 13.50-km Umsen–Barapathar road, passing through Pilangku-A, Jyrmang, Chibra and Mawiong, at a cost of Rs 56.01 crore. In healthcare, a 30-bedded AYUSH facility at Civil Hospital, Shillong, will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 10 crore.
The package also includes a 2×50 MVA, 132/33 kV substation at Mawkhanu, along with a 132 kV double-circuit Saisiej–Mawkhanu line and GIS bay at Saisiej, at a cost of Rs 72.50 crore.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the projects would strengthen Meghalaya’s infrastructure and support the government’s vision of a more connected and prosperous state.
Radhakrishnan began his four-state Northeast visit on September 6, covering Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. His Meghalaya programme followed engagements in Assam, including the Golden Jubilee celebrations of Geetanagar College and the convocation of Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences.
The Vice President is scheduled to travel to Manipur on September 8 and Arunachal Pradesh on September 9, where he will attend programmes including a special session of the state Legislative Assembly.
