The Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister asserts that expanded irrigation coverage could help farmers adopt triple-cropping and urges youth to pursue commercial agriculture
Guwahati: Assam Agriculture and Irrigation Minister Pijush Hazarika on Wednesday reviewed several irrigation initiatives during a visit to Tamulpur district and called on young people to explore commercial farming.
Accompanied by Cabinet Minister and MLA Biswajit Daimary, Hazarika inspected the proposed Pagladia River canal project at Manas Chowki in Subankhata. He announced a Rs 70-crore project covering around 1,800 hectares, with a mini-reservoir, aqueduct and sluice-gate strengthening works.
Hazarika said completion of the planned schemes could take the district’s irrigated farmland to nearly 8,000 hectares, creating scope for triple-cropping. He also inspected irrigation facilities along the Darranga, Kalanadi, Borolia and Bornodi rivers and directed officials to undertake strengthening and augmentation works.
At Sesapani, Hazarika visited entrepreneur Daimalu Basumatary’s farm, where dragon fruit and arecanut are cultivated across 11 bighas. The farm currently earns around Rs 5 lakh annually and could generate Rs 15 lakh within five years, he said.
Hazarika urged local youth to consider commercial agriculture as a route to financial independence and assured government support for such ventures.
