The Chief Minister wants the institute to turn research into practical solutions for floods, healthcare, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and urbanisation
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has called on IIT Guwahati to take a larger role in driving technology-led transformation across Assam and the Northeast, saying its contribution must go beyond academic and research achievements.
Speaking at IIT Guwahati’s 33rd foundation day programme, the Chief Minister said the institute carried a wider responsibility towards the region and should translate knowledge into solutions for people’s everyday challenges.
The Chief Minister highlighted advanced manufacturing, healthcare, skilling, disaster resilience, agriculture and emerging technologies as key areas for greater collaboration.
Furthermore, he cited ongoing projects involving low-field MRI, surgical robotics, plant-based therapeutics, semiconductor skilling, drone-based flood response and AI-based credit assessment for women-led enterprises.
The Chief Minister also urged IIT Guwahati to work on flood-resilient infrastructure, scientific river management, climate-resilient agriculture, early-warning systems and sustainable urban planning.
Outlining his vision of “Tea, Tree and Tech”, he said Assam’s traditional strengths, biodiversity and technological opportunities must converge to drive growth. The Chief Minister also announced that the state government would facilitate 100 scholarships for IIT Guwahati students.
