Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing attend the House physically for the first time since the ethnic conflict began in May 2023
Imphal: For the first time since ethnic violence broke out in Manipur in May 2023, two Kuki-Zo legislators attended an Assembly session physically in Imphal on Wednesday.
Saitu MLA Haokholet Kipgen and Saikul MLA Kimneo Haokip Hangshing attended the opening sitting of the 8th Session of the 12th Manipur Legislative Assembly. Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen joined the session virtually.
Their return marks the first physical participation of Kuki-Zo MLAs in Assembly proceedings in Imphal in around three and a half years. Kuki-Zo legislators had attended previous sittings virtually following the formation of the government led by Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh in February 2026.
Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh welcomed the development, calling it a positive step towards strengthening peace and unity in the state. He said the government would continue efforts focused on dialogue, reconciliation and addressing the trust deficit between communities.
