Rescue teams continue search operations eight days after the devastating floods along the Nepal-Tibet border
The death toll from Nepal’s devastating flash floods rose to 1,127 on Wednesday, while 4,858 people remain missing, Nepal Police said as rescue operations entered their eighth day.
Police said the highest number of bodies were recovered from Chitwan, Nawalparasi East, Nawalparasi West and Nuwakot. Postmortem and legal identification procedures have been completed for 1,113 bodies, while 95 have been handed over to relatives.
Details of 911 unidentified bodies have been uploaded to the Nepal Police website to help families identify missing relatives. Security forces have so far rescued 6,541 people, while 7,912 police personnel have been deployed for search and rescue, relief distribution and recovery operations.
The disaster has also left hundreds of foreign nationals missing. Nepal has reported 583 missing foreigners from more than 30 nationalities, including 275 Indian citizens and 128 people of Indian origin.
In India, Uttar Pradesh authorities have recovered 17 bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal. These are not included in Nepal’s official death toll.
Nepal Prime Minister Balendra Shah described the disaster as an extraordinary event and linked the increasing risks in the Himalayan region to climate change.
