AASU Leader Detained During Sonapur Toll Protest Over NH-27 Road Conditions

Rinku Deka was detained after protesters shut the Nazirakhat toll gate and demanded repairs to damaged highway stretches following a fatal Khetri accident

Sonapur: Tension prevailed at the Nazirakhat toll gate in Sonapur after local residents and protesters demonstrated against toll collection, demanding immediate repairs to damaged stretches of National Highway 27 following a fatal road accident at Khetri.

Police detained Rinku Deka, associated with the Jorabat unit of the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), during the protest. He was reportedly detained on allegations of provoking protesters. Further investigation is underway to determine his role and the circumstances surrounding the detention.

The protesters reportedly shut down the toll gate and demanded that toll collection be suspended until the damaged portions of the highway are repaired. They questioned the collection of toll fees while several stretches of NH-27 remained in poor condition.

Toll collection later resumed despite the demonstration, triggering further resentment among protesters, who accused the toll gate authorities and administration of failing to address their concerns.

A heavy police presence was deployed at the site to maintain law and order and prevent the situation from escalating. The protesters reiterated their demand for suspension of toll collection until necessary repair work on the highway is completed.
