SIBLAC urges PM Modi to halt new hydropower projects in Sikkim and order an independent review of existing projects after Nepal floods
Gangtok: The Sikkim Bhutia Lepcha Apex Committee (SIBLAC) has urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to halt new hydropower projects in Sikkim and order an independent assessment of existing projects following the devastating floods in neighbouring Nepal.
SIBLAC convenor Tseten Tashi Bhutia said the disaster highlighted the vulnerability of the Himalayan region and called for a fresh assessment of development activities in the area.
The committee has sought a time-bound inquiry into the environmental, geological and seismic risks associated with existing and proposed hydropower projects in Sikkim. It also called for an assessment of their potential social and national security implications. SIBLAC further urged the Centre to release a white paper detailing the findings of the proposed assessment.
The demand follows extensive damage to hydropower infrastructure in Nepal, where at least 13 projects along the Bhotekoshi and Trishuli river corridors were reportedly affected. The 111-MW Rasuwagadhi Hydropower Plant was among the damaged facilities.
Bhutia said SIBLAC was not opposed to development but maintained that economic growth should not compromise the ecological and social security of the Himalayan frontier.
