Villagers seek a probe and stronger security following the withdrawal of the Maha Regiment
Imphal: Tension flared in Manipur’s Ukhrul district on August 24 after suspected Kuki militants allegedly fired six to seven rounds towards Sinakeithei, a Tangkhul Naga village, from Leplen Nepali Basti around midnight.
The firing reportedly took place at around 12:10 am. According to the village secretary, the gunshots came from the direction of a cemetery in Leplen, located around 270 metres from the residential area. No casualties were reported.
The incident has raised concerns over security arrangements after the Maha Regiment, previously deployed in the area, withdrew. Security responsibilities are now being handled by the Manipur Rifles, along with Government of Manipur personnel, the BSF’s 131 Battalion and civil police.
Residents said armed incidents have continued despite the security presence. Sinakeithei, surrounded by neighbouring Kuki localities, remains vulnerable amid tensions between the two communities.
Villagers have urged state and central authorities to conduct an immediate and transparent investigation into the firing and identify its source. They have also sought increased patrolling and stronger security arrangements in vulnerable areas, particularly to ensure the safety of residents and protect agricultural activities.
