A Nagaland-based group’s land claim has intensified tensions over Assam’s proposed eviction of 59 families in Golaghat
Guwahati: The proposed eviction of 59 families from No. 2 Negheribil along the Assam-Nagaland border in Golaghat district has triggered fresh tension after the Lotha Lower Range Public Organisation (LLRPO) claimed the disputed land falls within Nagaland.
The organisation said the area forms part of Lugayum and Mikirang villages in Nagaland and urged the Nagaland government to intervene. It also claimed to possess documents showing that some residents had purchased land there.
Residents and Assam-based organisations rejected the claim. Raju Narah, village head of No. 2 Negheribil, said families had lived in the area since the 1960s. “This is the land of Assam,” a leader of the Takam Mising Porin Kébang (TMPK) said, dismissing the Nagaland claim.
The dispute comes amid an Assam Forest Department eviction drive against settlements it considers illegal. In 2025, notices were served on 205 families, with 146 subsequently evicted. The remaining 59 approached the court, temporarily halting further action.
AJYCP leader Nikunj Medhi also questioned why the land claim was not raised during the 2025 eviction.
