NEPMZ suspends petrol, diesel and LPG transportation from Assam to Meghalaya, citing safety concerns amid unrest and attacks on Assam-registered vehicles
Shillong: The North-East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMZ) has suspended the transportation of petrol, diesel and LPG from Assam to Meghalaya, citing safety concerns for Assam-registered vehicles operating in the neighbouring state amid the ongoing unrest.
NEPMZ general secretary Ramen Deka said the union had also stopped loading and unloading operations in Meghalaya following reports of violence and harassment in several areas.
The union said the suspension would continue until the Meghalaya government takes effective measures to ensure the safety of Assam-registered vehicles, including tourist and commercial vehicles.
Deka said the decision was taken particularly because petroleum products are highly flammable and transporting them under unsafe conditions could put both drivers and consignments at risk.
“Unless the situation improves, our members are not willing to transport any kind of petroleum products to Meghalaya,” Deka said, urging the state government to restore normalcy and take action against those responsible for violence.
The development comes after long queues were witnessed at petrol pumps across Shillong on Friday, as residents rushed to refuel amid rumours of a possible disruption in fuel supplies.
The rush followed a road blockade along the Guwahati–Shillong highway and reported restrictions on the movement of goods and passenger vehicles between Assam and Meghalaya.
Social media messages claiming that petroleum supplies would be halted further fuelled panic among motorists. The latest suspension could affect the movement of essential fuel supplies to Meghalaya if the standoff continues, while security forces maintain heightened presence in Shillong.
