Prashant Kishor won the Bankipur by-election by 19,324 votes, ending the BJP’s over three-decade hold on the Bihar Assembly constituency
Patna: Jan Suraaj founder Prashant Kishor secured a decisive victory in the Bankipur Assembly by-election in Bihar, defeating BJP candidate Neeraj Kumar Sinha by 19,324 votes and ending the party’s more than three-decade dominance in the constituency.
Kishor polled 64,151 votes, while Sinha secured 44,827 votes. RJD candidate Rekha Gupta finished third with 14,273 votes. Kishor maintained a comfortable lead throughout the counting process.
The result is being viewed as a major political setback for the BJP, as Bankipur had long been considered one of its strongest bastions. The defeat also comes as an early electoral test for Bihar Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary, with Kishor having framed the bypoll as a referendum on the BJP-led government’s leadership.
Political observers attributed the outcome to growing anti-incumbency and public discontent over issues including the alleged NEET question paper leak and the Bhojpur police encounter, which they said influenced voter sentiment across communities.
In the other Assembly by-elections, the Congress retained the Datia seat in Madhya Pradesh, while the BJP successfully defended the Manjalpur constituency in Gujarat.
