The minister said the reservoir has a 15-metre flood cushion and assured downstream residents there is “no reason for undue concern”
Guwahati: Assam Education and Information Technology Minister Ranoj Pegu said the NHPC Lower Subansiri Hydroelectric Project at Gerukamukh is operating safely and under strict monitoring after inspecting the dam and its operational systems.
During the visit, Pegu reviewed the 116-metre-high dam, control room, Early Warning System and reservoir. He said the reservoir is currently filled up to 92 metres, while maintaining a 15-metre flood cushion for flood moderation. Around 3,800 cumecs of water is presently being released downstream.
Referring to the recent floods, the minister said the highest inflow of around 13,800 cumecs was recorded on July 13, of which 12,500 cumecs was released in a regulated manner while retaining sufficient storage to moderate flooding.
“After personally inspecting the project and interacting with the engineers, I am convinced that the Lower Subansiri Dam is safe and that the release of water is carefully monitored and fully under control,” Pegu said.
The Minister further assured residents of Dhemaji, Lakhimpur and Majuli that there is “no reason for undue concern”, adding that dam operations are carried out in accordance with the protocols of the National Dam Safety Authority and prioritise the safety of downstream communities.
