Byrnihat: The Meghalaya government is set to launch a pilot project in Byrnihat using solar-powered air purification machines following successful trials conducted by the Meghalaya State Pollution Control Board (MSPCB).
The proposal was reviewed at a meeting on July 29 attended by MSPCB officials, local village leaders and representatives of Mumbai-based Zero Carbon Tech24 Pvt. Ltd., the company behind the technology. During the meeting, experts demonstrated the system and outlined its potential to reduce air pollution in Byrnihat, which has repeatedly ranked among India’s most polluted towns.
Jirang MLA and Cabinet Minister Sosthenes Sohtun said the pilot project is aimed at improving air quality while ensuring industries in the area continue to comply with pollution control norms.
The minister also announced that the long-pending proposal to establish an MSPCB regional office in Byrnihat has been approved. The new office is expected to strengthen pollution monitoring, expedite inspections and improve enforcement against environmental violations.
The state government said the pilot project and the new regional office form part of its broader efforts to improve air quality and enhance environmental governance in the industrial town.
