The new directive prohibits ceremonial honours for state dignitaries at government events and asks departments to recognise members of the public instead
Shillong: The Meghalaya government has prohibited the felicitation of the Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Ministers, ministers and other state dignitaries at official government programmes with immediate effect.
The directive, issued by Personnel & Administrative Reforms (A) Department Secretary Isawanda Laloo, instructs all administrative departments not to organise ceremonial honours for state leaders during government functions. The order, however, provides an exception for Union Ministers and foreign dignitaries attending official state events.
Instead of honouring political leaders and senior officials, departments have been directed to felicitate two or three members of the public during such programmes. If considered appropriate, these representatives may also be invited to briefly address the gathering.
The circular states that the move is intended to shift the focus of official events towards recognising citizens while reducing ceremonial formalities. All departments have been instructed to ensure strict compliance with the new guidelines.
