Congress MP questions the effectiveness of the proposed amendments, criticises police action against student protesters and demands accountability over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak
New Delhi: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the Centre’s proposed amendments to the Public Examinations (Prevention of Unfair Means) Amendment Bill, 2026, arguing that the 2024 law had failed to prevent examination leaks and the new legislation would meet the same fate.
“The 2026 leak proved that the law was a failure and it will fail again,” Gogoi said while initiating the debate in the Lok Sabha. He questioned whether legal amendments would be effective if the government continued to “shield and protect” those allegedly responsible for corruption in the examination system.
Gogoi also criticised the alleged police action against students protesting over the NEET-UG 2026 paper leak, claiming pellet guns and electric batons were used against demonstrators. “Students were compelled to hit the streets. Their pain needs to be understood,” he said.
Gogoi further accused the government of prioritising ideology over education reforms and questioned the status of the high-powered committee constituted after the 2024 paper leak controversy.
The Bill, introduced on Monday, proposes stricter penalties, including up to 10 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to Rs 50 lakh for paper leaks.
