Over 88,000 animals affected and nearly 10,000 lost in the floods, with Mrinal Saikia urging the Assam government to provide financial assistance to livestock owners
Guwahati: The ongoing floods in Assam have severely impacted the state’s livestock sector, affecting 88,240 animals across multiple districts, according to the latest official figures.
The affected livestock includes 45,895 large animals, 26,335 small animals and 16,010 poultry. Golaghat recorded the highest number of affected animals at 24,723, followed by Jorhat (23,163), Nagaon (19,738), Sivasagar (10,279), Charaideo (9,964) and Dibrugarh (373).
The floods have also claimed 9,973 animals, all in Charaideo district, including 2,042 large animals, 2,225 small animals and 5,706 poultry, making it the worst-hit district in terms of livestock losses.
Amid the crisis, BJP MLA Mrinal Saikia urged the Assam government to provide direct financial assistance to families that have lost livestock and poultry. He said the floods had severely damaged the rural economy, particularly households dependent on cattle rearing and poultry farming, while appreciating the relief measures already undertaken by the state government.
The Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Department continues to provide fodder, veterinary care and disease monitoring in affected areas.
