UPPL has urged action against alleged illegal collections at Srirampur Check Gate, claiming they are driving up prices across Assam and the Northeast
Guwahati: The United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) has urged the Kokrajhar district administration to crack down on the alleged illegal collection of money from goods-carrying vehicles at the Srirampur Inter-State Check Gate, claiming the practice is contributing to rising prices of essential commodities across Bodoland, Assam and other Northeastern states.
In a memorandum submitted to the Sub-Divisional Officer (Civil), Gossaigaon, on July 21, UPPL alleged that an organised syndicate was collecting “illegal tax” from trucks transporting eggs, fish, livestock, cement and other goods under the guise of official authority.
The memorandum, signed by UPPL General Secretary (A) Raju Kumar Narzary, claimed the alleged collections have increased transportation costs, leading to higher prices of vegetables, meat, fish, cement, hardware and other essential items, particularly affecting economically weaker sections.
Seeking immediate intervention, the party urged the administration to identify and act against those allegedly involved in the collections. It said such action would help reduce the burden on consumers and ensure the smooth movement of goods through the interstate corridor.
Copies of the memorandum were also submitted to the District Magistrate and the Superintendent of Police, Kokrajhar.
