Flooding of the railway tracks by the overflowing Dikhow River disrupts services, while NFR arranges buses, special trains, food, and refunds for stranded passengers
Guwahati: The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) has suspended train movement on the Simaluguri–Namtiali and Simaluguri–Selenghat sections after the overflowing Dikhow River inundated railway tracks and station infrastructure in Assam’s Sivasagar district.
According to NFR, continuous heavy rainfall in the upstream catchment areas flooded Simaluguri town, submerging the station yard, railway colony and adjoining areas, with water overtopping the tracks.
In view of passenger safety, several long-distance trains originating from or bound for Dibrugarh and Tinsukia have been diverted via the Rangiya–Rangapara–Dibrugarh route, while a number of local passenger services have been cancelled, short terminated or short originated.
Cancelled trains include the 55914 Tinsukia–Jorhat Town Passenger, 75602 Tinsukia–Lumding DEMU, 15604 Ledo–Guwahati Intercity Express, 15968 Ledo–Rangiya Intercity Express and 55910 Dibrugarh–Simaluguri Passenger.
To assist affected passengers, NFR has arranged food packets, drinking water, ticket refund facilities and help desks at affected stations. Assam State Transport Corporation (ASTC) buses and local vehicles have been deployed to transport passengers from Namtiali to Sibsagar Town station, from where a special train has been arranged for Dibrugarh and New Tinsukia.
The railway said 217 passengers from the 22503 Vivek Express are being transported by road to Mariani, while arrangements have also been made for 570 passengers of the 15959 Kamrup Express and 490 passengers of the 15934 Amritsar–Tinsukia Express. Services will resume only after floodwaters recede and track restoration is completed.
