Army and Assam Rifles launch rescue operations in Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat as floods worsen, rail connectivity is disrupted and over 57,000 people remain affected
Guwahati: The Indian Army has launched Operation Jal Rahat to support civil authorities in rescue and relief operations as severe flooding continues to impact eastern Assam, with Charaideo, Sivasagar and Jorhat among the worst-affected districts.
Several columns of the Army and the Assam Rifles have been deployed to carry out search and rescue operations, while the Indian Air Force (IAF) has been placed on standby as the flood situation continues to worsen. According to official sources, Army personnel, working alongside the state administration and disaster response teams, have already rescued several stranded residents from inundated areas.
The floods have also severely disrupted transport infrastructure. Railway services have been affected after floodwaters damaged and toppled sections of railway tracks, while breaches in at least two embankments have inundated large areas and impacted thousands of villagers across eastern Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has deputed ministers Bimal Bora and Susanta Borgohain to oversee rescue and relief operations in the affected districts. The state government has also instructed senior ministers to closely monitor the situation and ensure timely assistance reaches affected families.
According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), one person died in Sivasagar on Sunday, taking this year’s flood-related death toll to five. More than 57,100 people across seven districts have been affected, with Charaideo remaining the worst-hit district. Authorities continue rescue and relief efforts as forecasts indicate further rainfall.
