Vehicular traffic will be diverted through the new Saraighat Bridge from July 13 to September 15 as authorities undertake extensive maintenance and implement special traffic management measures
Guwahati: The old Saraighat Bridge over the Brahmaputra will remain closed to all vehicular traffic from July 13 to September 15 to facilitate extensive repair and strengthening work, Kamrup (Metro) District Commissioner Swapneel Paul announced on Tuesday.
The decision follows a communication from the Railways stating that the decades-old bridge requires major maintenance. In response, the district administrations of Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup, along with other concerned departments, held a series of coordination meetings to prepare a comprehensive traffic management plan for the two-month closure.
“After extensive deliberations and requests from the concerned agencies, it has been decided that the old Saraighat Bridge will remain closed to traffic for a period of two months, from July 13 to September 15,” Paul said.
During the closure, all vehicles travelling between Kamrup (Metro) and Kamrup district will be diverted through the new Saraighat Bridge.
The administration is putting in place traffic regulation measures to ensure smooth vehicular movement, minimise congestion and maintain commuter safety while the repair work is underway. Authorities are also coordinating with relevant agencies to manage increased traffic on the new bridge and reduce inconvenience to commuters during the maintenance period.
