Sunil Gavaskar Proposes International Marathon in Guwahati: Assam CM Welcomes Idea

Himanta Biswa Sarma says the state will examine the proposal to host an international marathon on the lines of the Tokyo Marathon while recalling Gavaskar’s iconic cricketing legacy

Guwahati: Cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has proposed organising an international marathon in Guwahati on the lines of the Tokyo Marathon, with Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressing the state government’s willingness to examine the proposal.

Sharing the development on social media, the Chief Minister said he met Gavaskar, who suggested that Guwahati host a world-class marathon similar to the internationally renowned Tokyo Marathon.

“Shri Sunil Gavaskar ji met me and proposed to organise an International Marathon in Guwahati on lines of the Tokyo Marathon. We will be glad to host it and will definitely examine it,” the Chief Minister said.

If implemented, the event could place Guwahati on the global sporting calendar while promoting sports tourism, fitness and international participation in Assam. The Chief Minister also reflected on Gavaskar’s enduring legacy in Indian cricket, recalling how the batting great inspired an entire generation of fans.

“Like many of my generation, I also shared with him my childhood memories of those SUNNY knocks!” the Chief Minister added, referring to Gavaskar’s iconic performances during his playing career.

The state government is expected to examine the proposal before taking a decision on organising the event.
