India Launches Operation Amistad: Deploys Army Medical Team to Earthquake-Hit Venezuela

A 41-member Indian Army medical contingent equipped with the BHISHM Cube and nearly six tonnes of humanitarian aid has been sent to assist relief operations after the devastating earthquakes in Venezuela

New Delhi: India has launched Operation Amistad to provide humanitarian assistance to earthquake-hit Venezuela, deploying a specialised Indian Army medical contingent to support relief and rescue operations in the disaster-stricken country.

Responding swiftly to the devastating earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela, the Government of India dispatched a 41-member medical team from the Indian Army’s 60 Para Field Hospital. The contingent, comprising nine medical officers and other specialised personnel, departed aboard two Indian Air Force aircraft carrying nearly six tonnes of medical supplies and humanitarian aid.

A key component of the mission is the indigenously developed BHISHM Cube, a rapidly deployable modular field hospital under India’s Aarogya Maitri Project. The advanced system is capable of delivering emergency trauma care, conducting surgeries and providing intensive care support for up to 200 patients, significantly enhancing disaster response capabilities in affected regions.

The Indian Army team is equipped to provide emergency medical care, trauma management, surgery and critical care to those injured in the earthquakes, which have claimed at least 164 lives and left more than 970 people injured, according to the latest official figures. Announcing the mission, the Indian Army said, “Compartimos su dolor. Estamos con ustedes,” meaning “We share your pain. We stand with you.”

Describing the deployment as part of India’s humanitarian commitment, the government said Operation Amistad reflects the country’s long-standing commitment to humanitarian assistance and disaster relief, guided by the philosophy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” or “The World Is One Family.” India said it stands in solidarity with the people of Venezuela as rescue and recovery efforts continue.
