With the Tata Semiconductor facility at Jagiroad nearing operations, Assam is poised to attract more investments in advanced manufacturing and strengthen its position in India’s technology sector

Guwahati: Assam’s efforts to emerge as a major technology and manufacturing hub have received a significant boost, with the state government indicating that it is close to finalising agreements with two more semiconductor companies to establish units in the state.
The development comes as the Rs 27,000-crore Tata Semiconductor assembly and testing facility at Jagiroad continues to make rapid progress. The project, one of the largest industrial investments in the Northeast, is expected to begin exporting semiconductor chips later this year and is seen as a cornerstone of Assam’s growing technology ecosystem.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently said Assam is on the verge of a major technological transformation, adding that discussions with two additional semiconductor firms are in the final stages.
“Assam is on the cusp of a major tech revolution. Post the Tata Semiconductor facility in Jagiroad, we have almost finalised deals with two other companies to set up semiconductor units in Assam,” the Chief Minister said.
While the names of the companies have not been disclosed, the proposed investments are expected to strengthen Assam’s position in India’s semiconductor sector and generate new employment opportunities in advanced manufacturing.
Over the past few years, the state has actively pursued investments in electronics, semiconductor manufacturing and technology-driven industries as part of its broader industrial development strategy.
Officials believe the expansion of semiconductor-related projects will help integrate Assam into global supply chains, diversify the state’s industrial base and reinforce its emergence as a key technology destination in the Northeast.
The upcoming projects are expected to build on the momentum created by the Tata facility and accelerate Assam’s transition towards a technology-led economy.
