Speaking in Shillong, the Union Finance Minister said stronger institutions, private investment and women-led development will be central to transforming the Northeast into a key growth engine of India

Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman presented an eight-point development roadmap for the Northeast, describing the region as a crucial pillar in India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047.
Addressing a conference on externally aided projects in Shillong, Sitharaman said the Northeast has moved beyond a phase where development was measured only through infrastructure creation. Instead, she stressed the need to strengthen institutions, improve governance, enhance implementation capacity and build long-term partnerships.
“The Northeast is entering a decisive phase of development,” she said, identifying leadership, institutional capacity, human capital, women-led development, strategic financing, private investment, connectivity and partnerships as the key drivers of future growth.

The Minister highlighted the region’s young population, entrepreneurial culture and women leaders as major strengths. Consequently, she called for greater investment in education, skills and capacity-building initiatives.
Sitharaman also urged states to maximise the benefits of externally aided projects, noting that such initiatives provide not only funding but also access to global expertise and innovation. In addition, she encouraged greater private-sector participation in sectors such as tourism, logistics, agribusiness, renewable energy, manufacturing and digital services.
Emphasising connectivity and collaboration, the Minister said improved transport, digital and power infrastructure are creating new economic opportunities while advancing India’s Act East Policy. She added that inclusive growth must ensure that no district or community is left behind.
