Three Accused in AFDC Scam Get Bail: Probe Uncovers Alleged Rs 7.14 Crore Diversion

Investigators are probing suspected financial irregularities between 2017 and 2021, with allegations of funds being transferred to private accounts in violation of government norms

Guwahati: A Special Judicial Magistrate’s Court has granted bail to three accused in the alleged Assam Fisheries Development Corporation (AFDC) financial scam, even as the investigation continues to reveal fresh details of suspected fund diversion within the state-run body.

The accused, Birinchi Adhikari, Padmakanta Hazarika and Jyotish Saikia, secured bail in connection with the case registered at Dispur Police Station in 2022.

Sources claimed that procedural lapses during the investigation may have influenced the court’s decision. It has been alleged that the investigating officer did not place details of Dispur PS Case No. 298/2022, reportedly linked to the matter, before the court.

Hazarika was also granted relief on medical grounds. He had previously obtained bail from the Gauhati High Court in another case connected to the alleged scam.

Meanwhile, investigators have reportedly traced transactions involving approximately Rs 7.14 crore, which was allegedly transferred from the corporation to private bank accounts in violation of prescribed financial rules.

The probe has focused on transactions that allegedly took place between 2017 and 2021, with officials suspecting that funds were diverted to the accounts of employees, contractors and other individuals.

The alleged irregularities are said to have occurred during the tenure of former AFDC chairman and Morigaon BJP MLA Ramakanta Deuri. Investigators are also examining claims of collusion involving former officials, staff members and contractors.

The investigation into the alleged multi-crore scam remains ongoing.
