Driver bodies claim per-kilometre earnings have dropped from around Rs 25 to Rs 8, while petrol and diesel prices continue to rise

Guwahati: The Assam State Drivers’ Association and the All Guwahati Cab Drivers’ Association have announced a major protest on June 10, intensifying their demand for a revision of fare structures and measures to protect drivers’ livelihoods.
As part of the agitation, hundreds of online cab drivers are expected to gherao the office of the Transport Commissioner, alleging prolonged inaction despite repeated appeals to the government and transport authorities.
The associations said they have submitted multiple memorandums to the Transport Department, district administration and other concerned agencies over the years. However, they claim their concerns have largely gone unaddressed.
A key grievance centres on the widening gap between operational expenses and income. While fuel prices have continued to climb, drivers allege that fares offered through online cab platforms have steadily declined, reducing their earning capacity.
According to the associations, drivers who once earned nearly Rs 25 per kilometre now receive approximately Rs 8 per kilometre, placing significant financial strain on thousands of families dependent on the sector.
“Despite years of representations and movements, no meaningful solution has emerged. Drivers are struggling to sustain themselves under the current fare structure,” said Assam State Drivers’ Association president Dhruvaraj Axom.
The organisations said the June 10 demonstration aims to draw attention to the economic challenges faced by drivers and push for policy interventions that ensure fair earnings and sustainable working conditions.
