FWICE Row Over Ranveer Singh Triggers Debate on Bollywood’s Unofficial ‘Bans’

Reports of a non-cooperation directive linked to Ranveer Singh’s reported exit from Don 3 have reignited discussions on industry pressure tactics, contractual discipline and artists’ rights in Bollywood

Mumbai: A reported “non-cooperation” directive issued by the Federation of Western India Cine Employees (FWICE) against actor Ranveer Singh has sparked fresh debate within the Hindi film industry over professional accountability and the influence of trade bodies in film production.

The controversy surfaced after reports claimed Singh stepped away from Don 3 shortly before filming was scheduled to begin. According to industry reports, producers Farhan Akhtar and Ritesh Sidhwani allegedly suffered significant pre-production losses, following which a complaint was reportedly submitted to FWICE.

FWICE, one of India’s largest entertainment industry federations, represents technicians, junior artists, makeup artists, editors, stunt personnel and several other film workers. Although its directives are not legally enforceable, a non-cooperation call can disrupt productions by discouraging affiliated workers from participating in projects.

Industry observers say such disputes often emerge when actors exit projects after major investments have already been made in sets, scheduling, overseas bookings and promotional planning. Producers typically argue that sudden withdrawals affect not only financiers but also daily-wage workers dependent on film shoots.

At the same time, legal experts have repeatedly maintained that industry bodies cannot completely restrict an individual’s right to work. “Trade organisations may issue advisories, but absolute employment restrictions can face judicial scrutiny,” legal observers note.

Neither Singh nor the makers of Don 3 have issued a detailed public response so far.
