AICC names Wazed Ali Choudhury and Dr Joy Prakash Das to lead the Congress Legislature Party amid the ongoing Assembly session

Guwahati: The Indian National Congress finalised its leadership structure in the Assam Legislative Assembly by appointing senior MLA Wazed Ali Choudhury as the Leader of the Congress Legislature Party (CLP) and Dr Joy Prakash Das as the Deputy Leader.
The appointments were cleared by the party high command and formally announced through a statement issued by AICC general secretary K C Venugopal on May 26.
The decision comes after several rounds of consultations within the party over the leadership arrangement in the 16th Assam Legislative Assembly, where Congress is preparing to strengthen its coordination and opposition strategy.
Earlier, Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi had stated that the final decision on the CLP leadership would be taken by the All India Congress Committee after discussions with party legislators and central observers.
Speaking after his return from Delhi, Gogoi had said the state leadership would “abide by the decision of the high command” following consultations with MLAs.
In recent days, Congress legislators also held a series of internal meetings in Guwahati as speculation intensified over who would lead the party inside the Assembly.
Political observers believe the appointments will play a crucial role in shaping Congress’ floor management, legislative coordination and future strategy during Assembly proceedings. The CLP leadership is also expected to influence the formal selection of the Leader of the Opposition in the House. The announcement comes at a significant time as the newly constituted Assam Assembly continues its ongoing session.
