Health authorities isolated and monitored a woman arriving from Uganda in Bengaluru as India intensified screening measures following the global Ebola alert

Bengaluru: India has reported no confirmed Ebola cases after a traveller from Uganda, isolated in Bengaluru as a precautionary measure, tested negative for the virus, according to Health Ministry sources.
The individual, a 28-year-old woman who arrived at Kempegowda International Airport on May 23, was placed under observation after airport health officials noticed symptoms including fatigue and mild body ache. Authorities later shifted her to the state-run Epidemic Diseases Hospital in Indiranagar for monitoring.
“A sample was sent to the National Institute of Virology in Pune, and the result has returned negative for Ebola Virus Disease,” a Health Ministry source said, adding that the woman remained stable throughout observation.
The development comes as India strengthens surveillance at airports and ports following the World Health Organisation’s declaration of Ebola outbreaks in Uganda and the Democratic Republic of Congo as a “Public Health Emergency of International Concern”.
The Centre has already issued a travel advisory urging citizens to avoid non-essential visits to high-risk regions, including Uganda, DRC and South Sudan.
Meanwhile, Karnataka has activated emergency preparedness measures. Officials said travellers returning from affected countries have been advised to self-monitor for 21 days and immediately report symptoms to health authorities.
The state has designated Bengaluru’s Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases as an isolation centre, while hospitals in Bengaluru and Mangaluru have been identified for quarantine and treatment support if required.
