Ranjeet Kumar Dass Returns as Speaker of Assam Legislative Assembly

Senior BJP leader becomes the first person to serve a second term as Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly

Guwahati: Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass on Thursday assumed charge as the 22nd Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, becoming the first person in the House’s history to hold the constitutional post for a second term.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulated Dass on his appointment and described his return as a significant moment for the Assembly. Dass had earlier served as Speaker between 2016 and 2017.

A veteran BJP leader, Dass began his political journey with the party in 1992 and later emerged as one of its key organisational figures in Assam. He first entered the Assembly from Sorbhog in 2011 and later won from Patacharkuchi in 2021.

Over the years, he held several important responsibilities, including serving as Deputy Leader of the BJP Legislature Party and president of the BJP Assam unit from 2016 to 2021. Under his leadership, the party expanded its organisational base across the state.

Dass also served in the Himanta Biswa Sarma cabinet, handling portfolios such as Panchayat and Rural Development, Food and Civil Supplies, and Consumer Affairs.

Known for his measured approach and parliamentary experience, Dass is expected to play a crucial role in conducting Assembly proceedings during the new term. Political observers believe his administrative background and earlier experience as Speaker could help ensure smoother debates and maintain decorum in the House.
