East Jaintia Hills Imposes Section 163 at DC Office After Protest Disrupts Operations

The administration banned gatherings of five or more people inside the Khliehriat DC office complex following a protest by student groups and villagers over local issues

Shillong: The East Jaintia Hills district administration has enforced prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), 2023, within the Deputy Commissioner’s office premises in Khliehriat after a protest allegedly disrupted official functioning.

District Magistrate Manish Kumar issued the order on Wednesday following a demonstration by members of the Jaintia Students’ Union (JSU), Jaintia National Council (JNC), and residents from the Daistong area.

According to the administration, protesters entered the DC office campus and allegedly moved inside the office building, leading to tension within the premises and affecting routine government work.

The order stated that the situation raised concerns over public safety, possible damage to government property and a potential deterioration of law and order. Consequently, the administration prohibited the assembly of five or more persons within the boundary of the Deputy Commissioner’s office complex until further notice.

Officials warned that any violation of the directive would invite legal action under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, along with other applicable provisions of law.

The restrictions came into effect immediately as authorities moved to restore normal functioning and maintain peace within the administrative premises.
