Himanta Biswa Sarma Begins Second Term as Assam CM: NDA 3.0 Takes Oath in Grand Ceremony

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Amit Shah and top NDA leaders attended the swearing-in ceremony in Guwahati as Himanta Biswa Sarma returned for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister

Guwahati: Marking a major political milestone for the BJP-led alliance in Assam, Himanta Biswa Sarma on Tuesday took oath as Chief Minister for a second consecutive term at a grand ceremony held at the Veterinary College Field in Khanapara, Guwahati.

Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya administered the oath of office and secrecy in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, and several NDA chief ministers and deputy chief ministers from across the country.

With the swearing-in, the NDA officially began its third straight term in Assam. Sarma also became the first non-Congress leader in the state’s history to serve two consecutive terms as chief minister.

Alongside Sarma, four ministers were sworn into the new cabinet BJP leaders Rameswar Teli and Ajanta Neog, AGP president Atul Bora, and BPF MLA Charan Boro. Former Union minister Teli returned to state politics through the new cabinet, while Neog, Bora and Boro were part of the previous government as well. Senior BJP leader Ranjeet Kumar Dass has also been named the NDA’s candidate for Assembly Speaker.

The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) secured a sweeping mandate in the 2026 Assembly elections, winning 102 seats in the 126-member House. The BJP alone crossed the majority mark with 82 seats, while alliance partners AGP and BPF secured 10 seats each.

Soon after taking oath, Sarma said the government’s immediate focus would remain the implementation of the BJP’s electoral promises and development agenda.

Meanwhile, elaborate security arrangements were put in place across Khanapara ahead of the ceremony. Barricades, traffic diversions and multi-layered security deployment were enforced around the venue as senior political leaders, diplomats and thousands of supporters gathered for the high-profile event.
