Top NDA leaders gather at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground as BJP formally ends TMC’s 15-year rule in West Bengal

Kolkata: BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari, on May 9, takes oath as the first BJP Chief Minister of West Bengal at a grand ceremony held at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, marking a major political shift in the state.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, BJP national president Nitin Nabin, Union Minister J. P. Nadda and several chief ministers from BJP-ruled states attended the ceremony.

Before the swearing-in, Modi and Adhikari paid tribute to Rabindranath Tagore on his birth anniversary, which coincided with the event.

Calling it the beginning of a “Sonar Bangla” era, Adhikari described the BJP’s victory as a “historic moment” for the state. The BJP secured 207 seats in the 2026 Assembly elections, defeating the All India Trinamool Congress and ending its 15-year tenure in power.

Meanwhile, at Kolkata’s Brigade Parade Ground, the BJP has set up a memorial in tribute to party workers who were killed in incidents of political violence in the state.

The swearing-in ceremony is being seen as a major moment for the BJP as it formally takes charge in Bengal for the first time.
