Vijay to Take Oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister After Securing Majority Support

Congress, Left parties, VCK and IUML back TVK as actor-politician gets Governor’s approval to form government

Chennai: Vijay will be sworn in as the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu at 11 am on Saturday, after formally securing a majority in the Assembly and receiving approval from Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar to form the government.

The breakthrough came late Friday evening when Vijay met the Governor at Lok Bhavan in Chennai and submitted letters of support from 118 MLAs, the minimum required in the 234-member Assembly. Shortly afterwards, the Indian Union Muslim League, which has two MLAs, also extended support, taking the TVK-led alliance tally to 120.

The numbers fell into place after the Congress, CPI, CPI(M), and Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi backed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), helping the party cross the majority mark following days of political uncertainty.

The CPI(M), while submitting unconditional support, said the move was necessary to “ensure stability and respect the people’s mandate.”

The development followed intense political negotiations led by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, who reportedly reached out to VCK chief Thol Thirumavalavan and IUML leaders to consolidate support for Vijay.

Earlier, the Governor had twice declined to invite TVK to form the government, citing a lack of proof of majority, triggering protests and criticism from opposition parties. Vijay’s TVK had emerged as the single largest party with 108 seats in its debut Assembly election.
