High-Altitude Kedarnath Trek Turns Fatal for Young Assam Woman

Papori Deka from Morigaon reportedly suffered breathing complications just 500 metres from the temple; she was scheduled to marry later this year

Morigaon: A pilgrimage to the sacred Kedarnath Temple ended in tragedy for a family in Morigaon district after a young woman from the state lost her life during the journey.

The deceased, identified as Papori Deka from Dalongghat village, had travelled to Kedarnath with friends when she reportedly developed severe breathing difficulties while trekking towards the shrine. According to reports, her condition deteriorated rapidly near the temple premises, and she passed away on May 4, barely 500 metres from the destination.

Her mortal remains reached her native village on the morning of May 7, drawing grieving relatives, neighbours and residents who gathered to pay their final respects. The incident has left the entire locality in shock.

The tragedy became even more emotional after family members revealed that Papori was set to get married in December. During the final rites, her fiancé, Jyoti Prasad Dutta from Guwahati, reportedly applied sindoor to her forehead beside her mortal remains, a deeply moving moment that left many in tears.

Papori was the daughter of Dulal Chandra Bordoloi and Chandimai Bordoloi. Locals remembered her as a cheerful and compassionate young woman whose sudden death has created an irreplaceable void in the community.

The incident has also renewed concerns over the physical risks associated with high-altitude pilgrimages, where low oxygen levels and difficult terrain can pose serious health challenges.
