“Not a Single Hindu in Detention Camps”: Himanta Rejects Allegation

Assam CM calls reports “baseless,” criticises TMC remarks, highlights BJP’s electoral confidence

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on April 25 firmly dismissed allegations that Bengali Hindus are being held in detention centres in the state, describing the claims as “completely baseless” and misleading. “There is not a single Bengali Hindu in detention camps in Assam. If there is even a single Bengali Hindu, I am ready to resign today,” he said.

He further cited the Immigrants (Expulsion from Assam) Act, 1950, underlining the legal framework in place. “The Supreme Court has granted Assam significant authority under this law. If a Deputy Commissioner determines that a person is an illegal immigrant, action can be taken within 48 hours,” he stated, emphasising swift administrative action.

Subsequently, Sarma criticised Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Sayoni Ghosh, arguing that public discussions in India should remain rooted in domestic cultural and religious contexts. “When in India, one should speak about Ayodhya and Ajmer Sharif,” he remarked, adding that such statements reflect a “mental problem,” thereby sharpening the political exchange.

Turning to the electoral landscape, Sarma projected strong gains for the BJP. “This time, we will win 100 seats in Assam,” he said. He also pointed to developments in West Bengal, noting, “I can confidently say that the change in atmosphere after the first phase is visible. People now strongly believe that the BJP is going to win.”

Meanwhile, Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar noted that West Bengal witnessed one of its highest-ever voter turnouts in the first phase since Independence.

Polling concluded at 6 pm with participation reaching 91.91 per cent. Several districts recorded over 90 per cent turnout, including Dakshin Dinajpur (94.85 per cent), Cooch Behar (94.54 per cent), Birbhum (93.70 per cent), Jalpaiguri (93.23 per cent), and Murshidabad (92.93 per cent).
