Hearing concludes; prosecution opposes relief as all accused remain in judicial custody

Guwahati: The fast-track court has reserved its order on the bail application of Shyamkanu Mahanta, a key accused in the death case of Assamese singer Zubeen Garg, and will pronounce its decision on April 30.
The court concluded hearings after detailed arguments presented by defence counsels Pran Bora and Rajdeep Banerjee. Notably, the matter has been heard on a day-to-day basis in recent days, reflecting the urgency surrounding the case.
Meanwhile, a separate bail plea filed for co-accused Siddharth Sharma is also under process. The court had earlier deferred consideration due to technical issues in the affidavit, which are now being rectified.
On the other hand, Special Public Prosecutor Ziaul Kamar has submitted written objections, strongly opposing bail for both accused.
The case is being investigated by a Special Investigation Team (SIT) of the Assam Police. Authorities have charged Mahanta and others with murder under provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) in connection with the singer’s death in Singapore on September 19 last year.
At present, all seven accused including Mahanta, Sharma, Sandipan Garg, Shekharjyoti Goswami, Amrit Prabha Mahanta, and PSOs Paresh Baishya and Nandeswar Borah remain in judicial custody following their arrest in October.
Earlier, the SIT filed a detailed chargesheet before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate’s court, outlining its findings in the case.
