Women-led protest at Khurai Lamlong turns tense; unrest linked to recent deadly blast in Bishnupur

Imphal: Tensions escalated in parts of Imphal East on April 17 after security forces resorted to tear gas to disperse a torch rally at Khurai Lamlong, as protests continue across Manipur.
The demonstration, organised by the All Manipur United Clubs’ Organisation along with allied groups, drew a large number of women protesters from different localities. Marching towards Khurai Lamlong Bazaar, participants raised slogans against central forces and asserted their determination to “protect their land.”
However, the situation turned volatile when protesters attempted to cross barricades set up by security personnel. A brief confrontation followed, prompting forces to fire tear gas shells to control the crowd. Notably, authorities had already heightened security in the area, deploying both state and central forces at strategic points in anticipation of unrest.
Meanwhile, the protests are part of a broader wave of agitation triggered by recent violence in the state. Public anger intensified after a deadly explosion in Bishnupur district, where two children lost their lives and their mother sustained injuries.
In addition, demonstrations have taken multiple forms in recent days, including daytime sit-ins and night-time torch rallies across several locations. A similar march earlier this week, from Lilong to Singjamei, also witnessed clashes.
Authorities, therefore, continue to maintain a close watch as sporadic confrontations persist, with the overall situation remaining tense in several parts of the valley.
