Manipur CM stresses reconciliation, flags humanitarian concerns amid ongoing ethnic tensions

Imphal: Manipur Chief Minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh on April 17 emphasised dialogue and coexistence as the only path to peace during his first visit to Ukhrul district after assuming office, against the backdrop of continuing ethnic unrest in the state.
Interacting with residents across multiple villages, Singh underscored the human cost of the conflict and urged communities to prioritise reconciliation. “There is no other option left other than dialogue for the restoration of peace,” he said during an emotional interaction at Thawai Kuki village, where he acknowledged the pain and suffering caused by the violence.
Manipur has witnessed prolonged clashes between Meitei and Kuki communities since May 2023, triggered by tensions following a ‘Tribal Solidarity March,’ leaving over 260 people dead and displacing thousands. Against this backdrop, Singh called on citizens to consider the long-term impact on children and education, assuring efforts to restore normal schooling and essential services.
Meanwhile, during stops at villages such as Sharkaphung, Shangkai and Shokvao, residents raised concerns over infrastructure gaps, including drinking water shortages and road connectivity. Singh directed officials to examine a bridge construction proposal and said work could begin within the year, while also promising priority action on water supply issues.
In addition, he reviewed progress on the Imphal–Ukhrul road project and assured that challenges would be resolved through coordination with senior officials.
However, concerns persist beyond infrastructure. Reports from Churachandpur indicate that some displaced families have alleged exclusion from relief assistance, highlighting gaps in rehabilitation efforts.
The visit reflects ongoing attempts to rebuild trust and restore normalcy in a state still grappling with conflict and displacement.
