CM flags concerns over alleged fake documents, calls for stricter action on deepfakes in elections
New Delhi: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has announced plans to approach the Election Commission of India with a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) after the state Assembly elections, raising concerns over the alleged use of misleading material during the campaign.
Speaking in an interview, the Chief Minister claimed that certain accusations and documents targeting him and his family surfaced at a critical juncture, just ahead of polling, potentially influencing voter perception. Questioning the accountability framework, he said, “If such claims are later proven false, what corrective mechanism exists?”
He further argued that deliberate dissemination of fabricated information by political entities should invite strict penalties. “If any party is found to have intentionally misled voters, its registration must be reconsidered,” he asserted.
Framing the issue as a threat to electoral integrity, the Chief Minister said his proposed legal move would aim to protect the credibility of democratic processes. He added that he would pursue the matter in his personal capacity.
