IAF Civilian Staff Held for Alleged Espionage Link with Pakistan Network

A multi-tasking employee at Chabua Air Force Station accused of passing sensitive defence information since 2023; arrest follows multi-agency intelligence operation uncovering wider spy network

Guwahati: A 36-year-old civilian employee at an Indian Air Force station in Assam has been arrested for allegedly sharing classified military information with Pakistan-based operatives, officials confirmed on Sunday, March 22.

The accused, identified as Sumit Kumar from Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh, was working as a multi-tasking staff member at Chabua Air Force Station. Authorities allege he misused his position to access and transmit sensitive data related to defence operations.

The arrest followed a joint operation by Rajasthan Intelligence and Air Force Intelligence, which investigators say has exposed a broader espionage network. Kumar reportedly came under scrutiny after a separate गिरफ्तारी in Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer earlier this year, where his name surfaced during interrogation.

According to officials, Kumar had been in contact with suspected Pakistani intelligence handlers since 2023 and allegedly shared details concerning fighter aircraft deployment, missile systems, and personnel at air bases in Chabua and Nal in Rajasthan’s Bikaner district. He is also accused of facilitating covert communication by helping operatives create social media accounts using mobile numbers registered in his name.

Acting on intelligence inputs, a joint team detained Kumar in Assam and transported him to Jaipur for questioning at a central interrogation facility. He has since been booked under the Official Secrets Act, 1923, along with relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Officials termed the development a significant breakthrough, adding that investigations are ongoing to identify further links and operatives connected to the network.
