Pandu Port elevated corridor, cruise terminals and maritime training centre are expected to strengthen connectivity along the Brahmaputra

Guwahati: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday unveiled a set of infrastructure projects related to inland waterways in Assam, aimed at improving river transport, promoting tourism and strengthening economic activity along the Brahmaputra River.
At the event held at Jyoti-Bishnu Auditorium in Guwahati, the Prime Minister inaugurated an elevated road corridor that connects Pandu Port with National Highway 27. Built with an investment of Rs 180 crore, the corridor is expected to streamline cargo movement by providing smoother access between the river port and the highway network.
The PM also laid the foundation stones for two cruise terminals at Biswanath Ghat and Neamati Ghat. The terminals, part of National Waterway 2, will improve passenger amenities and support the growing river cruise tourism sector in the region. The combined cost of these projects is estimated at Rs 158 crore.
Another major initiative launched during the programme was the Regional Centre of Excellence at Bogibeel in Dibrugarh. Developed with an investment of Rs 188 crore, the centre will function as a training hub for inland navigation and maritime logistics and is expected to train over 5,000 students every year.
The projects are being executed by the Inland Waterways Authority of India under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, to strengthen trade, tourism and employment opportunities along the Brahmaputra corridor.
Speaking at the event, Modi said that tourism in Assam is increasingly becoming a driver of economic growth, creating livelihood opportunities for local youth and businesses connected to the travel and hospitality sector.
The programme was attended by Lakshman Prasad Acharya, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Sarbananda Sonowal, among other dignitaries, who highlighted the importance of the projects in strengthening connectivity and economic prospects in the Northeast.
