Guwahati player becomes first Grandmaster from Northeast India; CM Himanta Biswa Sarma congratulates him on historic feat

Guwahati: A proud moment for Assam as Mayank Chakraborty has become India’s 94th chess Grandmaster, marking a historic milestone as the first player from Northeast India to achieve the prestigious title.
Hailing from Guwahati, Mayank secured his third and final Grandmaster (GM) norm at the Hotel Stockholm North by First Hotels Young Talents tournament in Stockholm, Sweden. With 6.5 points from eight rounds, he was leading the tournament when he defeated Philip Lindgren in the eighth round, achieving the final norm with one round still remaining.
His achievement has been widely celebrated across Assam and the Northeast, with many describing it as a landmark moment for the region’s sporting landscape.
Congratulating the young player, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote on social media, calling it a proud moment for the state and extended his best wishes to Mayank for his future.
Mayank had long been the highest-rated chess player from the Northeast, and his achievement is expected to inspire many young chess enthusiasts from the region to pursue the sport at the highest level.
