Gaurav Gogoi Slams Govt. Move to Rename Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed Medical College

Congress MP calls the reported move an insult to Assam’s history and urges the government to retain the former President’s name

Guwahati: Senior Congress leader and MP Gaurav Gogoi on Thursday strongly criticised the Government of Assam over its reported decision to remove the name of former President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed from the medical college in Barpeta, calling the move “a grave insult” to the state’s history and sentiments.

In a statement, Gogoi said Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed was a distinguished freedom fighter and the first Assamese to become the President of India, serving as the country’s fifth President. He questioned the justification behind removing the name of such an eminent personality from the institution that was originally named in his honour.

Gogoi alleged that the decision reflects an attempt to pursue communal politics and create religious polarisation for political gain. According to him, removing the name of a respected national leader like Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed undermines the legacy of a proud Assamese figure who made significant contributions to the country.

He further said the move was extremely unfortunate and hurt the sentiments of the people of Assam. Gogoi argued that such decisions not only disrespect a former President but also disregard the contributions of a freedom fighter whose service to the nation remains an important part of India’s history.

Urging the state government to reconsider its decision, the Congress MP said the name of Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed should continue to be associated with the Barpeta medical college. Respecting the history of Assam and recognising the contributions of its great personalities, he added, is the responsibility of every citizen and the duty of the government.
