Centre Recommends Rs 15,431 Crore Four-Laning of Baihata Chariali–Tezpur NH Stretch

The Rs 15,430.90 crore project will upgrade a 135.87 km corridor with bridges, flyovers, bypasses, and an emergency landing facility near Tezpur

Guwahati: The Ministry of Finance, India, has recommended the proposal to four-lane the Baihata Chariali–Mission Chariali stretch of NH-15, a major highway corridor connecting several parts of Assam.

The project, estimated at Rs 15,430.90 crore, will cover a total length of about 135.87 km, aiming to upgrade the existing two-lane road and remove long-standing traffic bottlenecks between Baihata Chariali and Mission Chariali near Tezpur.

Officials said the proposed plan includes 71 km of brownfield widening of the existing highway and about 65 km of greenfield stretches, which will be developed through bypasses and realignments.

Key infrastructure components of the project include 15 major bridges, 19 flyovers and 43 underpasses. To ease congestion in urban areas along the route, five bypasses are planned at Baihata Chariali (8 km), Sipajhar (10 km), Kharupetia (8 km), Dhekiajuli (5 km) and Mission Chariali–Tezpur (28 km).

The project aims at improving traffic movement and safety along the busy corridor. The highway will also feature an Emergency Landing Facility (ELF) near the Tezpur Air Force Station, enabling emergency aircraft operations when required.

Reacting to the development, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the Centre’s continued support in strengthening Assam’s infrastructure network.

Once completed, the four-lane highway is expected to function as a high-speed corridor improving connectivity, reducing travel time and supporting economic growth across the region.
