Rs 852 Crore Maharaja Prithu Flyover Inaugurated in Guwahati: Longest in Northeast India

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dedicates the flyover built in record time; the project, with 122 pillars and organised parking below, is to open for vehicular movement on March 14.

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma dedicated the Maharaja Prithu Flyover to the people of Guwahati, marking a major addition to the city’s rapidly expanding infrastructure network.

Built at a cost of Rs 852 crore, the project is the longest flyover in Northeast India. The structure was completed in 28 months against the scheduled timeline of 36 months. The flyover is expected to significantly ease traffic congestion in the city while also helping reduce fuel consumption, air and noise pollution. Authorities said the flyover will open for vehicular movement from March 14, 2026.

The project began toward the end of 2023 and was completed in about 18 months. The elevated structure rests on 122 pillars. Space beneath the flyover has been planned for organised parking facilities to discourage roadside parking and improve traffic management in the surrounding areas.

The flyover has been named after Maharaja Prithu, a legendary ruler of ancient Kamarupa. He is remembered for defeating the invading forces of Bakhtiyar Khilji in 1206 CE. Historical accounts suggest that Prithu led a coalition of local tribes, including the Bodo and Koch Rajbongshi communities, to crush the retreating army. The victory is recorded in the historic Kanai Barasi Bowa inscription, which commemorates the triumph as a defining moment in the region’s history.

With the inauguration of the Maharaja Prithu Flyover, the Assam government has added another major urban mobility project to Guwahati’s growing infrastructure landscape, reinforcing the city’s role as the gateway to Northeast India while addressing long-standing traffic bottlenecks.
