Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurates Saraighat Rana Smritisaudh, paying tribute to 132 warriors of the historic Battle of Saraighat; foundation stone laid for expansion of the Brahmaputra Riverfront Park

Guwahati: Assam marked a proud moment in its history as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the Saraighat Rana Smritisaudh in Guwahati, a grand memorial dedicated to the 132 brave warriors who laid down their lives defending the state during the Battle of Saraighat.
Located at Panbazar along the banks of the Brahmaputra, the memorial is engraved with the names of the fallen heroes and built in traditional Ahom architectural style. It aims to preserve Assam’s rich historical legacy while serving as a place of learning and research for scholars and visitors.
The Battle of Saraighat, fought in 1671 under the leadership of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan, remains one of Assam’s most defining moments, symbolising courage, resistance, and strategic brilliance against Mughal forces. The Smritisaudh stands as a lasting reminder of that sacrifice and pride.

On the same occasion, the Chief Minister also laid the foundation stone for the Phase III expansion of the Brahmaputra riverfront project. Spread across 2.5 acres at the old District Commissioner’s office premises, the development is expected to transform the area into a modern recreational and tourism hub.
Blending heritage with urban renewal, the twin initiatives seek to strengthen Guwahati’s cultural identity while enhancing its public spaces, ensuring that Assam’s glorious past remains connected to its future.
